Gemological Institute of America

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) was founded in 1931 with the mission "to protect all buyers and sellers of gemstones by setting and maintaining the standards used to evaluate gem quality."  GIA developed the International Diamond Grading System and the "Four C's," now the industry's standard for diamond quality evaluation.

National Association of  Jewelry Appraisers

Founded in 1981, the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA) states as its purpose, "to recognize, and make available, the services of highly qualified, informed, experienced, independent, and professional appraisers of gems and jewelry to those members of the public requiring such expertise."  It is the only appraisal association in the United States devoted solely to the appraisal of gems and jewelry and silver flatware and holloware.
